Ukai Dam completes 50 years: ‘Suryaputri Tapi Maiya’ worshipped for the longevity of the Ukai Dam

On the occasion of the golden jubilee, ‘Suryaputri Tapi Maiya’ was worshipped for the longevity of the Ukai Dam.

The Ukai project’s water gets utilized to irrigate 3.79 lakh hectares of land in the Surat, Valsad, Navsari, and Bharuch districts. We all remember Sardar Sarovar Dam due to its robustness and popularity. But Ukai dam has always found a way to reach us through geography textbooks.The dam’s construction was finished on January 29, 1972, at a cost of Rs.136 crore. Indira Gandhi, the then-Prime Minister of India, gave the opening speech. It got completed in 1972. The officials/employees of the Ukai Irrigation Department staged fundraising for the lifespan of Ukai Dam on the banks of the Tapi river today to commemorate the golden jubilee of the dam’s 50th anniversary.The whole district government, including District Collector HK Wadhwania and District Development Officer DD Kapadia, expressed their best wishes to the authorities of the Ukai Dam and the officers/employees of the Irrigation Department.
