Revamp, Redevelop, Revolutionize: Amrit Bharat Station Scheme by the Indian Railways is set to modernize the rail travel experience

Indian Railways, one of the world’s oldest and busiest railway systems, carried an astonishing 3.52 billion passengers and a staggering 1512 MT of freight in 2023,  with over 13,000 trains crisscrossing the nation daily and serving 7,325 stations, its connectivity is unmatched.

To ensure this vast machinery runs smoothly and to provide a modern and comfortable experience to its passengers, the Indian Railways launched the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. This ambitious project aims to redevelop 1309 railway stations across India. Recently, PM Modi laid the foundation stone for the redevelopment of 508 stations, marking a significant step in this endeavour.

The primary focus of the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is to enhance station facilities with state-of-the-art infrastructure, including roof plazas and city centres within the stations. The government has committed over Rs 24,470 crore for the successful implementation of the scheme.

As part of the redevelopment process, the Indian Railways is working on creating Master Plans that will integrate both sides of the city with the railway station. This approach aligns with the vision of overall urban development, centered around such transportation hubs.

To cater to various needs, the scheme aims to establish dedicated spaces for “Executive Lounges” and areas that are suitable for small business meetings. Since, ensuring smooth access for all passengers is a priority, the scheme thus proposes:

  • widening of roads
  • removing unnecessary structures
  • implementing clear and well-designed signage
  • establishing dedicated pedestrian pathways.

Furthermore, the plan also includes well-organized parking areas, improved lighting, and other amenities to provide a seamless experience.

Among the upgrades planned, the scheme envisions high-level platforms, ranging from 760 to 840 mm, at all station categories. The platform length will generally be 600 meters, accommodating more passengers and improving boarding and alighting processes.

In a bid to cater to diverse needs, the scheme also emphasizes creating sufficient toilets and amenities for differently-abled individuals. It aims to install escalators, provide comfortable and durable furniture in waiting halls, and offer free Wi-Fi services for passengers.

Other notable enhancements under the Amrit Bharat Station Scheme include foot overbridges, elevators, and designated parking areas for two-wheelers and cars. Beautification and landscaping efforts will be undertaken, with horticulture elements adding a touch of greenery to stations. Additionally, passengers can expect an integrated passenger information system, informative signages, better illumination, improved power supply arrangements, and CCTV surveillance for added safety.

The Amrit Bharat Station Scheme is set to transform the face of Indian railway stations, making them more than just travel hubs. With a focus on passenger comfort, modern amenities, and holistic urban development, the scheme promises to elevate the travel experience for the citizens.
