One-year-old Ram gets a new lease on life thanks to a timely liver transplant

Ram Mistry, the very lucky one-year-old was the recipient of a liver transplant after he was diagnosed with a rare congenital condition called ‘Biliary Atresia’ which eventually causes liver failure in toddlers if the condition is not treated.
The Mistry family of Padra were baffled when Ram developed liver cirrhosis, which eventually led to liver failure, in a few months of his birth. Thanks to the timely diagnosis of his doctors, he became one of the earliest patients of a liver transplant in India which was performed at a hospital in Navi Mumbai. Ram’s maternal aunt donated her liver to her nephew.

Apollo Hospitals commemorated this event by holding a conference on this successful surgery where Dr Vikram Raut, Consultant, Liver Transplant Surgeon & Dr Aabha Nagral, Consultant, Hepatology addressed the press on this happy occasion. Dr Nagral stressed on how a liver transplant was the only option in cases of ‘Biliary Atresia.’
