Scarcity of Door-to-Door garbage collection workers in Vadodara

The rise in cases of coronavirus in the country had led to a complete lockdown. Amid this crisis, many migrant workers were left stranded far away from their homes. In an attempt to leave for hometown, thousands thronged in government-organized buses, while others started their journey on foot. The absence of these migrant workers has affected in the waste management of Vadodara.

Due to the lockdown, people are staying at home and are generating more garbage than before. A VMC official informed that one vehicle can fill up to 2,000 units of waste. The same vehicle fills up to 1,500 units of waste as the houses unload waste directly. The waste compaction is generally carried out by a few of the workers who are migrants. In their absence, the waste compaction process does not take place. This has increased the weight of the garbage than the quantum of waste generated and has reduced its density.

From tomorrow onwards, the VMC has decided to deploy 291 of its vehicles for the collection of garbage. Presently they are working in shifts to get the work done and trying to be as efficient as they can in this distressing situation.
