In the 21st century, Indian Healthcare system has taken multiple initiatives to promote Organ Donation. There are times when organs have to be transported from one hospital to another and across cities. However, in the Indian scenario, jam-packed roads have time and again hindered with the timely arrival of in-transit of organs.
Yet, hope is not lost as Healthcare and Police functioning together has always brought in good news for our country.
In a recent and a rather commendable incident, a liver and a kidney were transported from Vadodara’s Tricolour Hospital to Ahmedabad in under 1.5 hours. The Ahmedabad-Vadodara route is a busy stretch of 112 km, and on a normal day, it would take about 2.5 hours to reach the city, considering the traffic. However, the organs were transported before time by devising the ‘Green Corridor’ by the Vadodara Traffic Police on the Vadodara-Ahmedabad route.
Green Corridor refers to a special route, established and vacated for ambulances carrying harvested organs, so as to ensure that the in-transit organ reaches the destination in the shortest time possible.
The existence of Green Corridor has made organ transportation (across a city or between two cities) an easy and effective way to save lives.
