CBSE 12th exams: Wheelchair bound Garima Vyas zips to victory, Parth Chowdhary tops state

A trip to Pavagadh two and a half years ago changed teenager Garima Vyas’s life. Though an accident left her with a spinal cord injury that left her wheelchair bound, it didn’t dim her enthusiasm for learning which got her 95.2% marks in 12th CBSE Arts result declared yesterday. Not only that, she scored 100/100 marks in Psychology and 92/100 marks in Maths.

Though Garima’s day included hours of rehabilitation therapy and physiotherapy because of her spinal cord injury, she made sure she had time to study. According to her mother, she is totally wheelchair bound and unable to move around without any help. Inspite of all these odds, Garima continued to study with such passion and achieved a feet that not many teenagers can in the CBSE exams.

Her school, Bright Day School in Vasna road also did their bit to pitch in. Since Garima is very interested in maths, an elective mostly taken up by students in the science stream, Garima’s ambition of taking up the elective in arts meant that the Science class had to be shifted on the ground floor from its original first floor place for her to attend the class because of her wheelchair. The school and the students happily shifted their maths class so that Garima could attend it. Her mother Kejal Vyas says she was most worried about her she would fare in Maths, but it is spectacular that she managed the feat of getting 92/100 in the subject without taking any tuition classes.

Instead, the industrious teen would use Google to solve her doubts. Google, coupled with not more than two hours of studying everyday interspersed with breaks led this teenager to victory in the CBSE Arts exams.

But her real struggle with start now. Now that she is applying for college admissions, the question of the college’s infrastructure comes into play. The colleges need to be wheelchair friendly. Kejal Vyas is afraid none of these colleges offering BA in psychology offer enough support for wheelchair bound students including MSU Faculty of Arts. That’s why Garima might be taking the distance learning route.

That’s not the only CBSE 12th board achiever in Vadodara. We also have teenager Parth Chowdhary, who managed to top the state in his 12th board CBSE exams (1st rank) and got 6th overall rank nationally from Delhi Public School Kalali.
