Confession of a Barodian back from Mumbai

You’ve lived a life on your own terms, own decisions when you’re in college. Going back home for a vacation is way different than moving back home for good. These are struggles one faces

1) Dry state be like

Drinking legally is something that one takes for granted in Mumbai once you are back, drinking is something one might as well do it in close doors or not do it at all. In any situation if you are a heavy drinker that habit is so going to be extinct soon.
Personally, someone like me who had the capacity to drink like a fish, has two glasses of wine now and is tipsy already.
2) No more clubbing on a Saturday night.

Say bye bye to your exciting night life as it is already over. Once you move back, the only thing you look forward to is a getaway to Mumbai to catch up with you’re awesome night life. Its not just about going to a club getting drunk, it’s about meeting you’re old clubbing friends, which stops after you get back to Baroda.

3) Mumbai can’t be described without the sea.

Shout out for the people who miss the sea, I do too. Chilling at Marine drive or maybe Worli(much preferred) is missed the most. The calmness of the sea, the view, all of this is something you’d always remember. Sipping a cup of tea or maybe having some chaat at Girgaon chowpatty, these evenings with your friends are always going to be in your midst.

4) It’s never too late for food

If you’re a townie you know where to get the best midnight Pav-Bhaji or maybe an early morning Irani chai, Muska Bun and Omelette. Oh yes! You guessed it right, Sardar Pav Bhaji at Tardeo and B.Mervans at Grant road.
The sky is the limit if you know where to go late night munching maybe it could be Bade Miyaan aColaba, or maybe Dadar staion for the late night(which 4am in the morning) Poha and Sheera.

In Mumbai, there’s always some place you’ll get food no matter what time its is.

5) Sense of freedom is lost.

Even if you’re parents aren’t strict, there are some sort of boundaries and limits you have to make sure you don’t cross.
The liberty to come home pissed drunk is long gone, and by any chance if you pull that stunt, you’re so going to be grounded for an entire month.

Also the sheer joy of lazing around and doing nothing is something you’re going to miss and feel bad , maybe drop a tear or something as your parents are going to judge you if you oversleep or maybe just sit and do nothing or maybe if you’re late for no apparent reason.

But you know there is always a flip side to everything, there are also some comforts one enjoys when one is home.

1) Meeting your old best friends

You might have made new friends in college who you share a great bond with but there is something about your old friends no one can replace. They have known you before the time you hit puberty, they’ve been around more than you can count and they also know your deep dark secrets so you have no option but to hold on to them. And plus they would kill you if they didn’t know each and everything about your exciting life in Mumbai.
2) Coming home to the most precious family member.
If you have a pet at home it makes it easier to shift as their unconditional love would help you survive in the times of distress. Even if you’ve lived out of sight for years they seem to have recognize you perfectly. The relationship you share with your pet is the most honest one, there’s no conflict or complication, it’s as simple as it gets.

3) Home food be the best

Living on your own seems exciting at first but after say a while you get sick of it as it’s too much of effort to learn how to cook, so one looks for options like Tiffin services or maybe restaurants. Everyday eating out literally gets to you, that is when you realize the importance of home food.

4) Commute is easier, also you know the city well.
As you’ve lived here for ages, you know which place is cooler, which is not. Also the hassle of catching a public transport is no more a problem because you probably have your old vehicle to go about the city easily. Old hangout spots are always on the ‘must go’ list as you’ve missed the old times.
5) Getting back to family.
This always has pros and cons but the cons always get sidelined when family is concerned. The amount of pampering you get from your family members is priceless as you’ve lived away for so long. They seem to have developed interest in your life, which makes you feel a lot more important. Your aunty maybe get you the recipe she makes the best. You’ve missed so many get-together there is so much of catching up to do. Not to mention your old room which you’ve missed the most.
