Cyclothon Spreading Message about Dangers of Tobacco Consumption Concludes in Vadodara

A bicycle tour aimed at spreading awareness about the increasing damage caused by tobacco and its detrimental effects on people’s lives concluded in Vadodara on Wednesday. The Cyclothon, organized by the Faith Foundation, was flagged off by Health Minister Rushikesh Patel and former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel from Mehsana. The main objective of the cycle rally was to create awareness among the people, especially the youth, and motivate them to stay away from tobacco for a healthy life.

As part of the month-long campaign against tobacco and in commemoration of ‘World No Tobacco Day’ 2023, a dedicated team of 15 cyclists and 40 volunteers embarked on a challenging journey covering a total distance of about 220 km from Mehsana district to Vadodara. Braving the scorching sun and heat, these cyclists and volunteers aimed to promote the World Health Organization’s theme of “Say No to Tobacco” and raise awareness about the need for nutritious food over tobacco consumption.

Sujan Samson, Project Director of the Faith Foundation, highlighted the collaborative efforts of various organizations during the Cyclothon. The State Tobacco Control Cell – Government of Gujarat, Government Ayurvedic Hospital Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad Municipal Corporation (AMC), Zilla Arogya Panchayat in Ahmedabad, Nadiad, and Anand were all involved in spreading the message in villages and cities along the route. They also emphasized the guidelines outlined in the Tobacco Products Act (COTPA 2003), including the importance of Smoke-Free Villages, Tobacco-Free Educational Institutions, and Smoke-Free Public Places.

The cycle rally commenced from Kadi village and continued through Kalol and Rupal-Gandhinagar Sector 22 to reach Ahmedabad’s Sabarmati Riverfront. The team then proceeded to Jetalpur Primary Health Centre in Ahmedabad, followed by Primary Health Centre in Arera Village Nadiad and Primary Health Centre in Mogar Village Anand. Finally, the cyclists reached the cantonment in Vadodara, where they were felicitated for their efforts. As a highlight of the event, a street play was performed, focusing on the Tobacco Production Act of 2003, to raise further awareness and understanding among the audience.

The Cyclothon played a vital role in disseminating the message of ‘No Tobacco’ across six districts. By covering a significant distance and engaging with diverse communities, the event successfully reached a wide range of individuals, effectively spreading awareness about the hazards of tobacco consumption. The enthusiastic participation of the cyclists and volunteers demonstrated their commitment to the cause and their dedication to promoting a healthier society.

The Faith Foundation’s initiative aligned with global efforts to combat the devastating impact of tobacco and encourage individuals to adopt healthier lifestyle choices. Through their tireless efforts, the Cyclothon not only raised awareness but also inspired individuals to make informed decisions and prioritize their well-being over tobacco addiction.

The event’s conclusion in Vadodara marked a significant milestone in the ongoing fight against tobacco consumption. The impact of the Cyclothon will continue to resonate within the communities, influencing attitudes and behaviors towards tobacco usage. The collaborative efforts of organizations, government bodies, and dedicated individuals have played a crucial role in driving this campaign’s success and fostering a healthier future for all.
