Dept. of Radiology joins SSG’s effort against COVID

During COVID, almost all the departments of Sayaji Hospital have rendered uninterrupted services and made an invaluable contribution in saving the lives of the patients, including the radiology department. The department, under the leadership of Dr. Chetan Mehta, conducted free CT scans and HRCT scans of COVID patients. As per the department, they provided uninterrupted services in both waves of COVID.

The department has also created a guiding web page to clear people’s confusion about the need for a CT scan in Corona. Expressing the feeling that the speedy and timely treatment of COVID patients increases the speed of recovery, Dr.Chetan Mehta said that X-rays and chest CT scans had been very useful in determining the exact treatment protocol for patients with this disease. Correspondingly, the Department of Radiology set up a special team under the leadership of Dr. Bhautik Kapadia. Administrative Nodal Officer for Corona Treatment Dr. O.B. Belim said, “The team provided uninterrupted and dedicated services round the clock which is very commendable.”

As per their reports, the department had taken digital X-rays of more than 27,800 patients during COVID. They wrote, “At a time when COVID was at its peak, the department has done HRCT of 30 to 40 patients daily and gave chest reports in about 10 minutes that made quick treatment easier.” Determination of the damage to the patient’s lungs from COVID is necessary for accurate treatment.

There has been a lot of confusion about when to get a CT scan, whether to get it and what the CT scan score indicates. Regarding this, under the guidance of the doctors of this department, resident Dr. Sachin, who has been working in the department for three years, made a unique contribution by creating a guide web page www.bmcradiology.blogspot.com.

Private Institutions roughly charge around 2500 for CT Chest and wait for the report, but according to the department, their test is offered to private patients at a reduced rate of Rs. 1150 and the report is given in 10 minutes. In rare cases, portable and compact Sonography devices have also helped patients who had undergone surgery. The fight against COVID, being a collective one, saw a coordinated effort from various departments at SSG.

COVID was followed by the epidemic of mucormycosis. The radiology department of Sayaji Hospital has also been actively contributing to its diagnosis and treatment. According to the department, they had accurately identified the disease by performing approximately 70 to 80 CT scans and 200 to 250 X-rays. The state government recently approved the upgraded state-of-the-art MRI machine department to aid the department.
