In a shocking incident the heavily used Alkapuri underpass (Garnala) near Railway station suddenly went up in flames on Wednesday afternoon.
Big fire was reported and thick smoke was seen coming out from both side of the tunnel as people rushed for safety after seeing the intensity of the flames.
Railway traffic was also disrupted briefly due to the incident and resumed later after fire brigade doused the flames.
The main reason behind the incident is said to be short circuit.
Fire brigade reached the spot and controlled the fire. Traffic was disrupted in the area.
The fire was reported near platform no. 6 and information was given to the Deputy Station Superintendent Control.
In view of safety the train traffic was stopped immediately. Upper Divisional Railway Manager AK Singh, Station Director and other officials visited the spot and took stock. Later movement was resumed with speed restriction by making the track safe and certified. During this time, 5 down and 2 Up trains were stopped for some time.
The cause of the underpass fire is being investigated.
