Renowned filmmaker Hrishikesh Mukherjee, fondly known as Hrishi Da, directed numerous popular movies during his illustrious career, but it is his 1971 masterpiece, ‘Anand,’ that remains etched in the collective memory. This poignant film revolves around the life of a terminally ill man who spreads boundless joy wherever he goes. Rajesh Khanna delivered a remarkable performance in the titular role, and the movie also marked the early appearance of a talented newcomer, Amitabh Bachchan.
Interestingly, ‘Anand’ draws inspiration from Hrishikesh Mukherjee’s own life. In a candid 1998 interview, Mukherjee revealed that the film is a quasi-biographical portrayal of his deep bond with the renowned filmmaker-actor, Raj Kapoor. Their friendship had deep roots, as Kapoor had collaborated with Mukherjee in his second directorial venture, the 1959 film ‘Anari.’ The origination of ‘Anand’ occurred when Raj Kapoor was suffering with a heart condition, serving as the driving force for Mukherjee to craft this heartfelt tale.
In essence, ‘Anand’ is more than just a cinematic gem; it is a heartfelt tribute, capturing the essence of a profound and enduring friendship.
The film ‘Anand’ conveys a profound message about leading a fulfilled human life by embracing numerous small and significant opportunities each day to spread happiness, even amidst personal hardships. This powerful message resonates through various events and songs within the film.
‘Anand’ boasts all the qualities of exceptional cinema, with outstanding direction and editing by the talented Hrishikesh Mukherjee, along with a compelling story and dialogue crafted by Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Gulzar. The heartfelt lyrics penned by Yogesh and Gulzar were beautifully complemented by the incomparable musical compositions of Salil Chowdhury. The soul-stirring deliveries by Mukesh and Manna Dey, especially songs like “Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli,” “Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye,” and “Maine Tere Liye Hi Saat Rang Ke Sapne,” continue to resonate deeply with countless individuals during contemplative moments of their lives, leaving an indelible mark cherished by many across generations. The film’s timeless melodies have left an indelible mark, cherished by many across generations. The film’s brilliance is further elevated by outstanding performances from its cast.
“दुःख अपने लिए, आनंद सबके लिए।”
In the film, Anand (Rajesh Khanna) is portrayed as someone with a melodious singing talent, and the three most famous songs sung by Anand in the film provide significant insights into his character. For instance, the song “Maine Tere Liye Hi Saat Rang Ke Sapne” emphasizes the importance of cherishing life’s little things and memories. “Kahin Door Jab Din Dhal Jaaye” reflects the golden and lively dreams of Anand and his desire to hold onto them, despite facing the prospect of their eventual loss. The song “Zindagi Kaisi Hai Paheli” showcases Anand’s optimism and his ability to find brightness in life, even amidst tragic circumstances. Despite being lively, positive, and always uplifting others, Anand carries profound loneliness and sadness within him, choosing not to share his sorrows with anyone. “हर हसी के पीछे खुशी होती है?” His search for family leads him to find motherly comfort in Mrs. D’sa, a sister in Suman, and a brother in Dr. Bhaskar.
Dr. Bhaskar is a cancer specialist who feels disenchanted with life. Although he is helpful and takes his oath as a doctor seriously, he is often unable to help some patients due to financial limits or their unrealistic expectations. Anand’s arrival rejuvenates Bhaskar’s hope, teaching him to find happiness in little moments. “बाबू मोशाय ज़िन्दगी बड़ी होनी चाहिए, लंबी नहीं।” Throughout the film, Bhaskar is seen laughing with Anand, and the poem “Maut,” penned by Gulzar and recited by Bhaskar in the film, deeply touches the soul, showcasing the depth of his emotions.
The side characters in the film, such as Dr. Kulkarni played by Ramesh Deo, are equally significant, leaving an indelible mark on viewers by revealing the morally questionable side of various professions.
‘Anand’ portrays the timeline after the partition, illustrating how people have lost their families and became orphaned for life. The film provokes thought on whether happiness stems from materialistic things or is merely a state of mind. It raises questions about the significance of money in attaining a happy life and ultimately conveys the main theme of living in the moment, regardless of past or future tragedies. However, it also prompts reflection on whether “living in the moment” is a luxury only reserved for those who can afford it or for those also who struggle to meet the basic needs of their life?
Over the years, the admiration for this cinematic gem and its profound message has only grown, cementing its revered place in several ‘must-see’ and greatest Hindi film lists.
