Ho ki hoi nai hoii: 52nd Samba Day Celebration in Vadodara

You must have spotted the gate where on the walls in the Makarpura-Akashvani area it is written “Ho ki hoi nai hoii” which means “What is there now won’t be there tomorrow, so live for today!”

Well, indeed it is the motto of the Samba Regiment located in Vadodara and it has a majestic history, especially in the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War, where they provided air defense from the Pakistani aircraft on the western border. How did the 29 AD Regiment end up in the Samba Regiment?

In the annals of military history, the 29 AD Regiment (Samba) stands as a symbol of unwavering courage and dedication. Established with a profound sense of duty, this regiment has etched its name in the tapestry of bravery, particularly during the 1971 war.

Origins of Valour

The regiment’s journey began on January 1, 1957, at Trimulgherry in Secunderabad, with Lieutenant Colonel (later Brigadier) Kanwar Bharat Singh leading the charge as its first commanding officer. From its inception, the regiment set forth a commitment to serve and protect.

Guardian of 1 Corps

The regiment assumed a pivotal role as the protector of 1 Corps’ assets in the Samba Sector. Its significance was magnified during the 1971 war, where it valiantly shot down 11 enemy aircraft, earning the distinguished title of ‘Samba.’

A Crucial Chapter Unveiled

The regiment’s role in defending Indian airfields along the western border became a crucial chapter in its storied history. Amidst the chaos of conflict, the gunners displayed exceptional courage, successfully repulsing Pakistani aircraft attacks.

29 Samba Day Celebrations in Vadodara 

Major General R.K. Sudan AVSM, a 1971 War Veteran, shared, “I was the Adjutant of the unit then and had every detail about the operation. The regiment was given the battle honour title ‘Samba Vulnerable Area / Vulnerable Point’ for its exceptional performance in the war and the heroic action of gunners. The day celebrates the heroism of this unit. On this day, I convey my message to the youngsters to work hard, and success will follow.”

The day-long celebrations in Vadodara began with a wreath-laying ceremony followed by a ceremonial parade at the unit. Veterans such as Major General R.K. Sudan AVSM, Major General IJS Hundal, Colonel PJS Sidhu, Colonel Jagjeet Singh Chima, Colonel U Sachdev, Colonel Ravi Parab, and Captain Satish Menon actively participated in the historic occasion. Colonel Bhanu Pratap Singh Rathore, Commanding Officer of 29 AD Regt SAMBA, and other officers were present throughout the event.
