POV: “Tera Mujhse Hai Pehle Ka Naata Koi, Yunhin Nahi Dil Lubhata Koi, Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa, Maane Tu Yaa Maane Naa”
(You know what scene is playing in your mind)

The movie was released even before the concept of platonic relationships was introduced in India. Jaane Tu Yaa Jaane Naa, with all those peppy songs, each and every friend group played in 2008 and we millennials still play these songs, although we are miles apart and some of them married with kids.
But can we say that the main characters fiery Aditi (played by Genelia Dsouza) and calm Jai (played by Imran Khan) actually had a platonic relationship that later turned into a love relationship?
“Jaane Tu… Ya Jaane Naa” is a heartwarming Bollywood romantic comedy that effortlessly captures the essence of youth, friendship, and love. Directed by Abbas Tyrewala, this film takes you on a nostalgic journey filled with laughter, emotions, and memorable characters.’
The plot starts w
The movie brilliantly written, starts with an airport scene, where a group of friends is narrating the story of their group, and of Jai and Aditi, whom they are about to meet. Jiggy’s girlfriend ‘Maya’ is unaware of the relationships in the friends’ group. Progresses to the twisting and entangling plots and development of various relationships in already established relationships.
The film had a wonderful cast with a chirpy, happy, and dominating Aditi, introverted, silent, and recessive Jai making them an ‘opposites attract’ couple. But they also, had veteran actors in a cameo, like Naseeruddin Shah, Paresh Rawal, and Rajat Kapoor. Along with others like the Khan brothers, Arbaaz and Sohail Khan, Manjeeri Phadnis and Ayaaz Khan.
Plot of Relationships…
Yes, there were many various entangled relationships, which observed closely can show how beautifully the character sketches were made.
Sibling Rivalry: Aditi and Amit
The hate-love relationship of Aditi (Genelia D’Souza) and Amit (Prateik Patil Babbar) showcases the close-knit relationship between the siblings. Even though, they are two different individuals, drifted apart due to their personalities, they still have their bond intact. Amit shares his feelings about Aditi’s relationships and her core feelings. Although, they have shown fighting in most of the film. Their late-night deep conversations, every sibling would love to have.
Classic Mother-Son Duo: Jai and Savitri
Yes, mothers and sons are the best combinations when it comes to parent-children relationships. This duo of Jai (Imran Khan) and Savitri (Ratna Pathak) have a very unique relationship, although they developed this because they have survived a bad time together. Savitri’s character shows all those traits of a ‘protective single mother’ even though she is open-minded and rather a best friend to her son. The sharing of responsibilities and having a friend-like conversation, helping each other to calm down, shows a regular relationship in a Bollywood standard film.
Cool Parents: Peachy and Pumpkin
Aditi’s parents, Peachy and Pumpkin who have very less roles in the film are the ideal parents for our generation, as we term them as cool parents, with no complications, no family drama, and in love couple. They support their children no wonder how complicated they are. The relationship from letting their daughter have a party at their place to letting their son pursue his art shows so much uncomplicated parenting…
The film shows the grassroots level of these beautiful relationships…
While exploring all other relationships, we also question whether love is finding comfort in your partner or is it something more, although none of us have been able to define love, we all have felt it. Especially finding it in your friend or best friend we often tend to avoid such situations because then maybe the friendship might end if we confess the feelings.
This movie could be a cakewalk because both of them had feelings for each other, which were untapped for each other but pretty visible to others in the group. Is love really that complicated to recognize or is it something that happens automatically?
The Prince Charming Moment
As stated by Jai’s father, ‘photo-framed’ Amar Singh Rathore (played by Naseeruddin Shah) the royal from Rajasthan, popularly called ‘Ranjhore Ka Rathore’ Jai accomplishes all the three eligibility criteria to become the Rathore; although his mom tries to deviate him because she wants to protect, he does this for his love Aditi. Well, we all are low-key like Jai. Our powers are unleashed when it’s about LOVE!
Every F.R.I.E.N.D.S. Group: Rats, Meow, Bombs, Rotlu, Jiggy & Shaleen
The group shows various personalities we find in every standard friend group, Shaleen: a friend who knows everything but won’t say a word, Jiggy: a friend who doesn’t care, a chap who is fine with everything, Bombs & Rotlu: the couple, a failure in love, they find solace in each other, Jai & Aditi: the best friends, sharing a special bond.
Some dialogues we will never forget but will relate to every day…
“Teri mom ne kabhi sabun se tera mooh nahi dhoya kya?; kitni gaaliyan deti hai”
“I always drop you home jai, girlfriend milegi toh doston ko bhul jayega kya“.
“Dost hai na, doston ki apni jagah hoti hai“.
This was a cult movie, which will always have a part in our lives…
“Dil ki yahi khata hai, dil ko nahi pata hai
Dil ki yahi khata hai, dil ko nahi pata hai
Ki dil chahta hai kya..
