Summary of Khyati Hospital Incident
The Khyati Hospital scandal has raised serious concerns following a health camp held in Borisana, near Kadi, Gujarat. After this camp, 19 patients were brought to Khyati Hospital in Ahmedabad, where, without the consent or knowledge of their families, angiographies were performed on all of them, and seven underwent angioplasty. Tragically, two patients passed away. These operations were conducted by Dr. Prashant Vazirani. Local villagers, outraged by the incident, caused damage to the hospital, accusing doctors of exploiting the healthcare system for profit under the guise of providing free services.
Gujarat Medical Council Investigation: The council has demanded an explanation from Khyati Hospital, requiring them to submit all treatment documents, reports, and evidence within seven days.
Nitin Patel’s Statement: Former Deputy Chief Minister Nitin Patel disclosed that the camp was organized by the hospital in Borisana, and patients were assured of free transport to Ahmedabad for treatments. However, the angiographies and angioplasties were allegedly performed without required permissions, raising suspicions of unnecessary procedures.
PMJAY Scheme Misuse: A 2023 CAG report revealed irregularities, showing that hospitals under the PMJAY scheme billed ₹3,507 crores, with Khyati Hospital conducting 650 surgeries in six months—605 of which were cardiology-related. Reports indicate that patients who had no significant blockages were still shown to have 90% blockages on paper, and stents were inserted needlessly.
Government Action and FIRs Filed: Following the scandal, Khyati Hospital’s PMJAY authorization was revoked, and FIRs were lodged against Dr. Prashant Vazirani and other hospital staff involved. The hospital’s records showed inconsistencies, as angiograms revealed no blockages in cases where the hospital claimed otherwise. Consent forms were allegedly not obtained according to medical protocol.
Wider Scrutiny and Future Steps: A total of 20 hospitals in the Mehsana district are now under review for similar irregularities, with potential penalties and blacklisting. Health Minister Rushikesh Patel has called for stricter SOPs in hospitals to prevent malpractice and ensure accountability in Gujarat’s healthcare services.
