Did you know Vadodara had its own Olympics?

Vadodara city was one of the hubs for sports to the lines of Olympics during Gaekwadi era.

Most of the Royalties during those times were fixated on promoting other sports, our Maharaja Sayajirao Gaekwad III promoted Idian sports in a big way.

Sportsmen form across the country and even foreign countries used to come for participation for more than 150 sports which included sports like Athletics, kabaddi, long jump, hockey, wrestling, bodybuilding and kho kho during vadodara‘s very own Olympics called ‘Royal Gaekwad Olympics’ (RBGO).

Mr Chandrashekhar Patil who had organized this photo exhibition said he wanted to show how sports were played centuries ago to the youngsters. Hind Vijay Gymkhana has also completed 100 years of its existence and so this photo exhibition was organized.

Baroda state also have been said to be the home for sports like aggad, a space similar to Roman Colosseum, where lot of blood sports were organized. It was located around the today’s Panigate area which was established by Mughals where they had animal fights like Rhinos and elephants.
