Movie Review : Gabbar Is Back (2015)

Starring : Akshay Kumar, Shruti Haasan, Kareena Kapoor,

Genre : Action, Crime, Drama

Akshay Kumar is back and this time he is bearded and stached as “Gabbar”. However, the only similarity that he shares with the the iconic villain is the name. Directed by Telugu director Krish, this movie is a remake of the movie ‘Ramana’ and is the story of Gabbar’s vengeance for his family, his fight against corruption and his plight for youth empowerment. The eternal conflict of the movie is whether Gabbar is actually the good guy or the bad guy. The movie brings nothing new to the table and will remind you of various supercop movies like Singham. The plot seems redundant and the movie feels longer than its runtime of 128 minutes. The larger than life dialogue delivery and action sequences by the Khiladi definitely overwhelm the social issues that they have tried to highlight. Shruti Haasan looks good but her acting feels stiff and her role has little to no significance in the story. Kareena Kapoor in her cameo role plays the lost love interest which explains the contradictory nature of our protagonist. Sunil Grover  plays a smart but overlooked constable and Suman Talwar plays the antagonist in a way that you almost wouldn’t miss Prakash Raj. The movie is entertaining but preachy at times and it tries to cover a lot of ground but it ends up feeling stretched and run-of-the-mill.
