Sweets are sold on normal days and especially during festivals and consumers rely on shopkeepers to buy from them. But sometimes shopkeepers cheat them by preparing and selling sweets that are harmful to the health of consumers.
To stop such malpractice, VMC health teams to strictly write expiry dates on sweet boxes. This rule is implemented to provide fresh sweets to the people. It will determine the number of days the sweet is fit for consumption. There is widespread resentment amongst traders selling sweets, about the implementation of rules.
While conducting the inspection, awareness about the new rule was spread among the traders. The traders were not just asked to mention the packing dates on sweet boxes but also on loose selling of sweets.
Health department official Dr. Mukesh Vaidya said, the Food Safety Department of the Health Department of the Corporation has been instrumental in ensuring strict enforcement of the Central Government Act and the operation has been started.
During checking at small and big sweet shops as well as confectionery units in the city, the teams found most of the traders had written the expiry date on the sweet box as per the order. Those who did not write the expiry dates were instructed to write on the box of sweets. If sweets without expiry dates are sold by the trader then strict action would be taken by the team.
