22 JULY INDIAN HISTORY

1678: Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj won the fort of Vellore.

1702: The ‘English Company of Merchants’ was renamed as United Company of Merchants of England Trading to the East Indies. And in 1833, the name finally changed to East India Company.

1875: Nand Kishor Bal, the author of the famous book ‘Palli Chitra’ was born. He was a great Odia poet, novelist and critic.
1925: Govind Talwalkar the famous journalist and editor, was born. He was a distinguished journalist, the legendary editor of Maharashtra Times, historian, scholar, and social reformer.
1965: Earthquake in the town of Anjar, Kutch. It had an estimated magnitude of 6.1 on the surface wave magnitude scale and a maximum perceived intensity of IX on the Mercalli intensity scale. It claimed 117 lives and around 800 people were missing.

1981: India’s first experimental geostationary communication satellite ‘Apple’ started working which was launched on June 19, 1981.

1991: New industrial policy for liberalisation of economies was announced in the Parliament.

1996: Finance Minister P. Chidambaram presented the 1996-97 budget to Parliament.

 

 

1997: Prasar Bharati Act, 1990 would come into force from September 15 as issued by Government.

1998: P T Usha at the age of won bronze medals in the 400m and 200m races and anchored gold and silver in the relay at the Asian Track and Field Championships in Fukuoka, Japan. India’s 4x100m quartet of Saraswati Dey, E.B. Shyla, P.T. Usha and Rachita Mistry win gold in the Asian Athletic championships at Fukuoka.
