Vibrant Rajkot Gears Up for “Rasarang Lok Mela-2023” with Extensive Preparations and Exciting Attractions
Since 1983, Rajkot has been eagerly anticipating the grand “Rasarang Lok Mela” during the festive season of Janmashtami Pavan Parva. This renowned folk fair has become a symbol of Rajkot’s cultural vibrancy. After being held at Shastri Maidan for many years, the fair has been shifted to Race Course in 2003 due to popular demand. Although the fair had to be suspended for two years due to the COVID-19 pandemic, it now returns, promising a kaleidoscope of joy for millions of attendees.
The Lok Mela, widely cherished for its colourful rides, provides not only entertainment but also employment opportunities for many individuals in need. Collector Prabhav Joshi emphasized the event’s significance, stating that the proceeds from the Lok Mela are dedicated to the development of Rajkot District. Over the years, the Lok Mela Committee has contributed to various development projects, including Ishwariya Park, Evening Post, Ghela Somnath, Kaba Gandhino Delo, and Veerpur Meenalwav.
With transparency as a priority, the Lok Mela Committee ensures fair allocation of stalls and plots through processes such as draws and auctions. This year, a total of 355 stalls and plots have been allocated for business and employment opportunities during the five-day fair from 05 to 09 September 2023. Among them, 178 stalls are dedicated to toys, 37 to food and drinks, 16 to ice cream, 52 to mini carts, and 44 to mechanical rides. Additionally, innovative elements such as a 3-feet court and tee corner will add to the allure, with total insurance coverage of Rs 4 crore.
To maintain law and order, an extensive security arrangement has been put in place. A team of 1266 police personnel, including 03 DCPs, 10 ACP, 28 PI, and 81 PSI, along with 100 private security guards, will oversee the event. Furthermore, 18 watchtowers equipped with TV cameras will enhance public safety. The Lok Mela has also taken a significant step by securing a Rs 4 crore insurance policy to ensure the well-being of visitors.
To facilitate the convenience of attendees, Rajkot Municipal Corporation has established public toilets at four locations, and free parking has been organized at 17 different sites for visitors from villages across Saurashtra. Furthermore, strict inspections will be conducted to ensure the fitness of the mechanical rides before they can commence operation each day.
Several committees have been formed to ensure smooth planning and execution of the Lok Mela, including water supply, mechanical ride inspection, fire service, sanitation, health, food and drugs, and law and order. The Regional Information Office will also have an exhibition stall to showcase various welfare schemes of the State Government. Additionally, 13 organizations will be granted free stalls to provide socially beneficial guidance, while the District Village Development Agency, Mahila Arthik Vikas Nigam, and Index-C will offer platforms for employment and marketing to women and small artisans.
The Lok Mela aims to foster public engagement by inviting suggestions each year for its name. This year, out of 252 suggestions received, the name “Rasarang” proposed by Vipul Sanghani emerged as the chosen one, symbolizing the harmonious fusion of diverse cultural flavors.
Rajkot is all set to celebrate the vibrant “Rasarang Lok Mela-2023” where joy, traditions, and opportunities converge, promising an unforgettable experience for all.
