Remembering the Legacy of Rajkot Archaeologist Shri PP Pandya on His Birth Anniversary

“A Pioneer in Saurashtra’s Archaeology, His Discoveries and Contributions Live On”

On November 8, we commemorate the birth anniversary of the eminent archaeologist Shri PP Pandya, whose groundbreaking work reshaped our understanding of Saurashtra’s history. His tireless efforts and remarkable discoveries, which included locating over 55 archaeological monuments, have left an indelible mark on the field of archaeology. His enduring legacy continues to inspire students, historians, and explorers, propelling them forward on the path of knowledge and discovery.

Shri PP Pandya was a driving force in establishing the Department of Archaeology, lending it a distinct identity. During his seven-year tenure, he covered a remarkable 2,000 kilometers on foot, contributing over 1,000 kilometers of research to the department. His dedication to the field was unwavering, and his legacy serves as a beacon for those in pursuit of knowledge and historical exploration.

The Assistant Director of Archaeology, located at Jubeli Bagh, Rajkot, operates under the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Government of Gujarat. Its mission is to conserve various archaeological sites across Saurashtra. Notably, the restoration of the Jam Tower and flood protection work at Khambhalida Caves, a site discovered by Shri PP Pandya, are among the initiatives undertaken to preserve our rich cultural heritage.
