Sacred Splendor Unveiling the Treasures of Vijaynagara’s Southern Temples

The Vijayanagara Empire 

Founded in 1336, by Hari Hara and Bukka during the rebellions against the Tughluq Dynasty in the Deccan, the Vijyanagara Dynasty lasted for more than 200 years as the supreme power in the South of the Indian Peninsula. Apart from the dominant rule of the empire, it’s architectural wonders are not only etched with the rich history of the empire, but it is in the thoughts of the rulers which takes us a step deeper to understand the significance of the temples they built. 

Let us take a quick trip back to our history to revel in some of the marvels of these Southern temples.

Hazara Rama Temple 

It was built in 15th century by Devaraya the second, the then ruler of  the Vijayanagara Empire. The Hazara Rama Temple is unique in many aspects. The name  “Hazara Rama”literally means Thousands Rama, which can also be seen in the abundance of relics depicting Rama. The most striking feature of this temple is the wall illustrating the story of Ramayana carved in stones. The beautiful relics portraying deities and animals are the most extensive ones to be found anywhere in India. 

Virupaksha Temple 

This glorious temple dedicated to Shiva was built in 7th century. Which means it is the oldest functioning temple in India. During the Vijayanagara era the temple was expanded, walls were adorned with beautiful murals, sculptures and cultural events. Virupaksha Temple is built in the Dravida style, showcasing hundreds of gods and goddesses being painted on the walls. You cannot miss the temple as the resplendent Gopuram is itself 9 stories high.

Vijaya Vittala Temple 

The Vijyaya Vitthala is dedicated to Vitthala, the reincarnation of Lord Vishnu. It was built in the 15th century by Devaraya the Second. Vijaya Vitthala temple is considered to be one of the largest and most famous structure in Hampi. This venerated temple has spectacular stone chariot and the beguiling musical pillars. Vijaya Vitthalas grand and artistic carvings and elaborate structures is unmatched by any other structures found in Hampi. The Maha Mantapa, Stone Chariot and Musical Pillars are the main attraction of this magnificent sacred temple. 

These Southern temples stand as timeless marvels of not only spiritual devotion of the people during those times but also of their architectural brilliance. Adorned with intricate carvings and steeped with historical importance, these holy edifices hold the cultural legacies of a bygone era.
