Shameful honour crimes against women still exist

In a harrowing incident, a married woman was publically humiliated and physically assaulted by her husband and in-laws to deliver mob justice in Radatiya village of the tribal part of Dahod district. The incident showing her being beaten up and humiliated publically went viral on WhatsApp on Saturday and the police have arrested seven people since then.

An FIR has been filed against the victim’s husband, Bharat Mavi and his friends and family for assault, criminal intimidation, confinement and violation of the Information Technology Act.
The woman had allegedly run away with her lover to Varamkheda district two months ago and was in hiding since then. The victim was brought back to Radatiya village when she was found by her husband and in-laws on January 24.

The husband was then beaten by a mob. The husband sat on her shoulders and asked her to lift him. The woman hardly had the strength to do so and the husband asked her to dance in front of everyone. The woman was then beaten by her husband’s aunt with a bamboo stick and her hair was cut by a sharp instrument. The video shows her begging her perpetrators to stop but none of the locals came forward to help her. The entire act was captured on three different videos and circulated on WhatsApp.

The videos reached the senior police officials which led them to track down the victim and file an official complaint against her perpetrators. The victim and her husband had been married for 4 years and have a three-year-old son.
