“Surat Municipal Corporation Invests in State-of-the-Art “Aluminized Seven Layer Entrance Suits” for Enhanced Fire Safety”
Surat, renowned as the Diamond City, is bolstering its fire department’s capabilities with a significant investment in advanced firefighting equipment. The Surat Municipal Corporation has taken a proactive step to acquire “Aluminized Seven Layer Entrance Suits” designed to ensure the safety of both firefighters and individuals trapped in intense blazes, with protection extending to temperatures ranging from 1600 to 1700 degrees. Each of these innovative shoots comes at a cost of Rs 2.79 lakh and will be distributed across 20 fire stations within the city.
Surat, a bustling industrial hub, boasts a diverse landscape encompassing textiles, diamonds, and bustling markets, making it susceptible to occasional fire incidents. In a bid to fortify its firefighting capabilities, the municipality is investing in the latest equipment, making it the third city in Gujarat, after Mumbai and Ahmedabad, to introduce 70 of these specialized suits.
The “Aluminized Seven Layer Entrance Suits” have been meticulously designed to offer comprehensive protection in situations where individuals find themselves trapped within buildings engulfed in severe fires. These shoots, a critical addition to the firefighting toolkit, are capable of withstanding temperatures between 1600 to 1700 degrees, making them invaluable assets in rescue operations.
The Surat Municipal Corporation (SMC) has embarked on an initial testing phase by receiving a sample shoot from a private company. Once the tests are successfully completed, the suits will be deployed for use in real-life firefighting situations.
Basant Parikh, the Chief Officer in charge of the Surat Fire Department, shared that this strategic investment involves procuring “Personal Protective Closing Suits” to ensure the safety of the firefighting personnel. The suits come in two variants, a three-layer suit and a seven-layer suit. The former is primarily for self-protection of firefighters, while the latter, certified by the NFPA, is designed to withstand extreme temperatures between 1400 and 1600 degrees Celsius. Notably, the seven-layer suit is not only a lifesaver for firefighters but also a vital tool for rescuing individuals trapped in fires where temperatures reach 1600 degrees Celsius. These suits are equipped with helmets, gumboots, trousers, and jackets, making them indispensable during fire rescue operations. Each “Aluminized Seven Layer Entrance Suit” comes with a price tag of Rs 2.79 lakh, while the three-layer variant costs up to 50 thousand rupees.
This significant investment underscores Surat’s commitment to enhancing safety and improving the effectiveness of firefighting operations in the city. The deployment of advanced equipment like the “Aluminized Seven Layer Entrance Suits” is poised to make a substantial difference in the safety of both firefighters and those they protect during fire-related emergencies.
