Surat’s Bridge Traffic Checkpoint: A pioneering measure to address traffic congestion, ensure smoother flow, and enhance safety on the city’s busy bridges.
Surat, known as the bridge/flyover city, has been grappling with increasing traffic issues caused by the very bridges that define its urban landscape. One such bridge, located on the ring road passing through the Ring Road Textile Market, witnessed a heavy influx of vehicles, leading to frustrating traffic congestion. To alleviate this problem, Gujarat has introduced a pioneering solution by establishing a traffic checkpoint on the bridge, a first-of-its-kind initiative in the state.
The bridge on the ring road holds significant importance due to its multi-connectivity. Serving as a crucial route from the station to the eighth line and providing access to the Parvat Patiya APMC market, it witnesses a high volume of traffic. Consequently, numerous complaints regarding traffic jams prompted authorities to devise a strategy to address the situation effectively. The decision was made to set up a traffic police station on the bridge, aiming to resolve the issues faced by commuters.
To tackle the traffic problem and enhance safety measures, an iron net has been installed at the bridge’s divider. Additionally, a small cabin has been constructed on the side of the bridge, serving as a base for two dedicated policemen who diligently regulate traffic. These officers patrol the bridge on motorcycles and are also responsible for assisting vehicles that experience issues while crossing the bridge. Their prompt action in pushing stalled vehicles prevents further traffic congestion and ensures a smoother flow of traffic for other commuters.
The introduction of the traffic checkpoint and the proactive efforts of the stationed policemen signify Surat’s commitment to addressing the city’s traffic challenges. By taking innovative measures and prioritizing the convenience of its citizens, Surat aims to create a more efficient and commuter-friendly urban environment.
