In the city of Vadodara, Gujarat, an electronics engineer named Shashank Choubey has embarked on a mission to revolutionize agriculture and promote sustainable farming practices. His innovative approach involves the use of aquaponics, a system that combines aquaculture and hydroponics to create a self-sustaining ecosystem for growing plants without soil. By utilizing water enriched with mineral nutrients derived from fish waste, Choubey aims to develop an alternative to traditional farming methods while conserving water and preserving organic nutrients.

Aquaponics, as practiced by Choubey, offers a unique and efficient way of cultivating crops while minimizing resource consumption. It involves the cultivation of plants in water rather than soil, with the water being continuously recirculated through a filtration system. The key element in this process is the integration of fish farming, where fish waste serves as a natural source of nutrients for the plants. Microbes present in the system convert the waste into fertilizer, which is then absorbed by the plants, effectively filtering the water before it returns to the fish tanks.

One of the significant advantages of aquaponics is its remarkable water efficiency. Compared to traditional farming methods, aquaponics employs approximately 90% less water, making it a highly sustainable practice, especially in water-scarce regions. Additionally, by eliminating the need for chemical fertilizers, the system ensures that the produce remains organic, free from harmful chemicals and pesticides. This approach not only benefits the environment but also provides healthier and safer food options for consumers.

Shashank Choubey’s journey into aquaponics began with a realization sparked by his travels to various South Asian countries. During these trips, he observed how food was grown near rivers using unhygienic practices, leading to contamination by heavy metals. Inspired to find a solution, Choubey envisioned developing a concept of urban farming that would replicate the benefits of river-side agriculture in a controlled and hygienic manner.

Motivated by his vision, Choubey, an electronics and communications engineer by profession, delved into extensive research and collaborated with the Gujarat Fisheries Department to gain knowledge about fish diseases, fish tank capacity, filtration techniques, and other technical details crucial for setting up an aquaponics facility. He chose to work with hardy fish species such as Gold and Koi, known for generating substantial amounts of waste, which serves as a rich source of nutrients for the plants.

Initially, Choubey started experimenting with aquaponics in a closed room devoid of sunlight. As he gained more experience and expertise, he expanded his operations to a hybrid model, utilizing natural sunlight on the terrace of a building to grow a variety of vegetables and herbs. To maintain optimal humidity levels for the plants in the scorching heat, Choubey installed a green net and employed sprinklers to regulate moisture levels.

Not content with his personal achievements, Choubey actively spreads awareness about aquaponics and trains aspiring farmers and students who are interested in adopting this sustainable farming technique. He firmly believes in the potential of aquaponics to alleviate the environmental impact of traditional agriculture and empower individuals to grow their own vegetables at home while potentially earning income through the sale of surplus produce.

As part of his efforts, Choubey works in collaboration with the government fisheries department in Vadodara to further promote aquaponics and its benefits. By bridging the gap between technological innovation and traditional farming practices, he aims to inspire a new generation of farmers and contribute to the development of a more sustainable and resilient agricultural sector.
