Vadodara’s Raj Sharma Triumphs in The Great Himalayan Ultra, Cycles 600 Kilometers in 41 Hours

“Overcoming Health Challenges and Scaling New Heights: The Inspiring Journey of an Ultra Cyclist”

In a remarkable achievement, 35-year-old Raj Sharma, an ultra cyclist hailing from Vadodara, demonstrated his unwavering determination in the 5th edition of ‘The Great Himalayan Ultra’ held in Ladakh during August. Battling through demanding terrains and unpredictable weather, this cyclist from Gujarat pushed his limits and successfully completed the grueling 600-kilometer race in just 41 hours. His journey took him from Leh to Kargil, Drass, and back to Leh.

Raj Sharma, by profession an electric contractor, embarked on his cycling journey as a means to combat various health issues like hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity. He primarily participates in ultra races, with his latest feat being ‘The Great Himalayan Ultra.’

“In April 2021, I took up cycling to address the multiple health challenges I was facing. Since then, I have never looked back. This sport has not only granted me the strength to combat hypertension, high blood pressure, diabetes, and obesity but has also remarkably improved my health. Today, my health parameters are nearly ideal, providing me with the motivation to continue racing. I typically focus on ultra races and was the sole representative from Gujarat in the 5th edition of The Great Himalayan Ultra Race, the world’s highest ultracycle race. This event took place from August 26th to 27th, and I completed the grueling 600-kilometer race in 41 hours, which included a mandatory three-hour rest stop at Kargil. The race’s most challenging and intriguing aspect is the starting point at 3500 meters above sea level and the highest point at Fotu La Pass, reaching 4108 meters above sea level. During the race, I ascended to a staggering 11,000 meters in elevation, which was truly exhilarating. On the first day, I covered 375 kilometers and completed the remaining 225 kilometers after the compulsory rest at Kargil,” shared Raj Sharma.

Raj accomplished this remarkable feat with the help of his lightweight carbon fiber imported bicycle, equipped with high-end components that provide an ideal power-to-weight ratio for conquering the toughest roads and challenging terrains. As an ultra racer, he also participated in last year’s Deccan Cliffhanger, securing the 6th position. He plans to participate in the same event this year with the aim of improving his ranking.

Raj Sharma serves as an inspiration to individuals grappling with health issues, demonstrating that with dedication and perseverance, one can not only normalize their health but also achieve remarkable milestones in their chosen sport. He emphasizes, “I set my goals and work diligently to achieve them. Health is of paramount importance, and I took up cycling to maintain fitness and control my health problems. As an ultra racer, I continually challenge myself in each event, striving to better my timing and rankings. I urge everyone to engage in a sport of their choice and make regular physical activity a part of their lives to lead a healthy and fulfilling existence.” It’s worth mentioning that Raj Sharma maintains a daily cycling routine, covering approximately 40 to 42 kilometers each day, even amidst his busy work schedule.
