Vadodara’s street art group beautify a space being used as a classroom

A group of 19 people, all of them young, congregated under the Lalbaugh flyover at 9 pm on Tuesday, 26th Feb.
The space under the Lalbaugh flyover, near SBI Bank is used as a classroom in the early mornings by a local NGO – Asha Deep: A street-to-school initiative.

The group painted the space part by part to transform it into a happy place that’s more befitting for a classroom for very young kids as compared to an empty space under a flyover.

This group of 19 people is a part of a local street art group called Project Retrofit. This group was started by 26-year-old Suhrd Joshi, currently a student at Banagluru’s Srishti School of Design and a resident of Vadodara who makes frequent trips to his home town.

He originally came up with the idea to start covering street walls in 2016. Since then, Project Retrofit has painted walls in Bengaluru, Pune, and Vadodara.
Suhrd connects with people wanting to paint through social media and provides them with materials required to paint the walls in various corners of the city. Suhrd’s objective primary motive is a simple one: to beautify his surroundings.

“Maybe I can also stop a few people from spitting pan on the walls if they are beautified,” he told us.
Suhrd also trains people to paint when he can’t be there in person. Apart from this piece of street art, Suhrd has also started painting a few murals near Lalbaug Vishwamitri road, railway wall.
Apart from Baroda, Suhrd has also painted a few street murals in Bengaluru and Pune.
