The decision was taken by Shri Purnesh Modi, Transport Minister for the registered numbers of the vehicle. Since the numbers hold a sentimental value for the owners, the government has decided to allot the old numbers of the scrapped vehicles will be made available for their new vehicles. This rule was not applicable before.
The Minister further said that considering the representations of the applicants through vehicle transactions, it has been decided to implement the Vehicle Number Retention Policy in Gujarat as well as in Delhi, Uttar Pradesh, and West Bengal. At the time when the vehicle owner applies for the transfer of the vehicle, the number of the vehicle returned will be allotted to the new vehicle purchased by the owner. Another number will be allotted to the transferred vehicle. At the time of scrapping the vehicle, the number of the old vehicle can be returned to the newly purchased vehicle by the vehicle owner and another number will be allotted to the old scrapped vehicle. For vehicle number retention, the fee has to be paid as per the provision of a fee fixed for the choice number as before.
Numbers of previously scrapped vehicles cannot be returned. The process of allocating the returned number to the new vehicle must be completed within 15 days. The process of allocating a new vehicle number to the vehicle is to be transferred or scrapped will have to be done immediately after the vehicle number is retained.
The Minister added that for vehicle number retention as per the earlier prescribed fee provision for Choice Number, Rs.8,000 / – for Golden Number of Two Wheeler, Rs.3,500 / – for Silver Number and Rs.2,000 / – for other number and other vehicles For Golden Number Rs.40,000 / -, for Silver Number Rs.15,000 / – and for another number Rs.8,000 / – minimum fee has to be paid.
