Visiting Ujjain? You must add these 7 temples to your itinerary!

“The town had fallen from heaven to bring heaven to earth…”

When you hear ‘Ujjain’, what is the first thing that comes to mind? ‘Mahakaleshwar Temple’? Temples, in general? Well, it makes sense. Ujjain earned its moniker ‘the city of Temples’ and rightfully so.  In every corner of this city, you can literally and metaphorically hear the sounds of devotion. You must have wondered, are all the temples of the country concentrated in Ujjain only? If you haven’t I’m sure you will.

Ujjain is one of the seven holy cities in the Hindu culture, bathed in the mystical Shipra River. According to legends, Lord Shiva himself graced this city and every temple here whispered their own stories and testaments of the enduring spirit of devotion. Ujjain is not just a collection of temples, it is a city where faith comes to life, whispering promises of peace to all who seek it.

Here is a list, a very specific list of very specific temples that you must visit, if you’re planning an Ujjain trip:

Mahakaleshwar Temple

This celestial temple in Ujjain is a special place, holding the revered Mahakaleshwar Shivling. It’s one of the 12 Jyotirlingas, sacred shrines of Lord Shiva. This temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in his Mahakaleshwar form, known as “the Lord of Time.” When one enters the temple, they feel a sense of peace, tranquil and calm. The main shrine is underground, with a self-manifested Shiva Lingam. During Mahashivratri, the temple is decorated, and many devotees come for prayers and rituals. The experience is serene, filled with chants and bells—a moment of spiritual connection at the Mahakaleshwar Temple.

Harsiddhi  Temple

The Harsiddhi Temple in Ujjain is a haven of history and mythology, dedicated to Goddess Harsiddhi/Annapurna, a manifestation of Parvati, Shiva’s consort. Legend has it that after a disagreement, Parvati found solace here, disguised as an old woman. During Mahashivratri, the temple adorns itself in festive hues. Women fervently pray for marital bliss, and the air is filled with devotional songs. The temple becomes a lively hub of offerings—flowers, sweets, and heartfelt prayers. It’s not just a pilgrimage; it’s a journey into a divine tale, where devotion and festivity intertwine at the enchanting Harsiddhi Temple.

Mangalnath Temple

Nestled on the banks of the Shipra River, the Mangalnath Temple whispers a unique cosmic tale. According to ancient Puranas, Mars was birthed from Earth, and this celestial haven offers a prime view of the red planet. The temple’s architecture weaves a story of intricate carvings in a grand octagonal hall. Dedicated to Lord Shiva as the cosmic overseer of Mars, the temple attracts seekers of astrological wisdom. During Mahashivratri, a celestial celebration unfolds as devotees seek solace for Mangal dosh. Red flowers and sindoor grace the deity, unveiling a harmonious dance of Hindu astrology and divine blessings.

Navgarh Shani Mandir

Known as Triveni Teertham locally, this ancient temple, standing strong for 2000 years, holds a sacred space in the heart of Ujjain. It shares a divine connection with Shani Dev, who resides in the form of Lord Shiva. Remarkably, this temple claims the distinction of being the world’s first Shani Dev temple. Here, devotees not only pay homage to Shani Dev but also offer reverence to the planets of our solar system. An age-old belief echoes that presenting oil to Lord Shani Dev, the guardian of karma, during Amavasya (new moon night) can unravel the threads of life’s challenges.

Chaubis Khamba

The Chaubis Khamba Temple earns its name from the 24 exquisitely crafted pillars that adorn its sacred space. Each pillar is a dedication to different Hindu deities, providing a visual narrative of the region’s rich artistic heritage. Upon entering, your eyes will meet the carved idols of Mahalaya and Mahamaya, the revered guardian goddesses of Ujjain. Despite not being directly linked to Shiva, the temple’s historical importance and architectural splendor make it a compelling stop on your Mahashivratri pilgrimage.

Kal Bhairav

The mystical realm of Kal Bhairav Temple is dedicated to the fierce manifestation of Lord Shiva. Uniquely, this temple stands out for offering liquor as a sacred prasad to the deity—a tradition rooted in the lore of Shiva ingesting poison during cosmic ocean churning. Mahashivratri sees a surge of devotees, creating an intense atmosphere with rhythmic chants and spirited dances. Seeking Lord Shiva’s blessings, visitors partake in this distinct spiritual experience. The temple’s vibrant traditions and captivating legend make it an extraordinary stop for those yearning for a unique connection with the divine during Mahashivratri festivities.

Gadkalika Temple

Gadkalika Temple is an abode dedicated to Goddess Kali-an intense form of Goddess Parvati. Located on Ujjain’s outskirts, this temple emanates powerful vibes. An exceptional feature is the large iron trident, believed to be wielded by Goddess Kali herself, possessing the ability to fulfill wishes and remove obstacles. During Mahashivratri, tantric practitioners flock to conduct special rituals, seeking the benevolence of Goddess Kali. The air vibrates with intense chants and drum beats, offering visitors a profound and spiritually charged experience. If you seek spiritual potency, a visit to this temple is highly recommended.
