A mother wedded off her underage, 17-year-old daughter to a 38-year-old man in an exchange of a large sum of money with the help of two brokers.
The mother, Miraben, who lives in Sayajipura area of Nehru Nagar, has two daughters and one son. She made a deal with brokers Dilipbhai and Ashok Joshi to marry off her 17-daughter, Sagira for a sum of Rs 1.35 lakhs.
The girl was engaged to the 38-year-old son of Dhirubhai Karshanbhai Shingada, Akshay, who lives in Rajkot’s Vandhari village and a notarized agreement was made on Rs 100 stamp paper where the girl’s age was mentioned as 25 years.
The mother refused to perform the religious ceremony for the wedding saying it had been less than a month when her son had died. The groom’s family got angry and kidnapped the girl from her house.
This incident came to light after the mother called the police saying her daughter has been kidnapped.
The police arrested a total of 9 people including the groom’s family and the mother and are looking for the brokers.
