Western Railway has ensured the constant supply of essential commodities through its special parcel trains. The zone has now run a total of 504 Parcel Special Trains to different parts of the country to transport about 1.11 lakh tonnes of various essential commodities like agricultural produce, medicines, fish, milk. The revenue generated through this transportation has been approx. Rs 36.35 crore. During this period, 81 milk special trains were run by Western Rly, with a load of more than 61,500 tonnes and 100% utilization of the wagons.
On 31st August 2020, six parcel trains including a milk rake left from various stations. These included three parcel special trains – Bandra Terminus to Jammu Tawi, Porbandar to Shalimar, and Dewas to New Delhi, two indented rakes one from Karambeli to New Guwahati and other from Kankaria to Benapol, and a special milk rake from Palanpur to Hind Terminal.
393 COVID-19 special parcel trains with a load of almost 37 thousand tonnes were also run to transport various essential commodities. During the lockdown period, from 22nd March till 30th August, a total of 13,423 rakes of goods train has been used by WR to supply essential commodities amounting to 27.96 million tonnes. 26,448 freight trains have been interchanged with other zonal railways, in which 13,216 trains were handed over and 13,232 trains had taken over at different interchange points. The revenue generated through these goods trains is approx Rs. 3,534 crore.
The total revenue loss on account of Coronavirus has been approximately Rs. 2,363 crore which includes about Rs 356 crores for the suburban section and approximately Rs. 2,007 crores for non-suburban.
Despite the loss, Western Railway has ensured the refund amount of Rs 421.39 crores. Till now, 65.11 lakh passengers have canceled their tickets and have received their refund amount too.
